Christmas In April Application - Deadline November 1, 2009

Christmas in April is an annual, one-day project to repair the homes of the seniors of our community who cannot do the work themselves due to some type of disability and financial hardship.

To be eligible for consideration, the HOME TO BE REPAIRED MUST BE OWNED AND OCCUPIED BY THE HOMEOWNER AND THE HOMEOWNER MUST BE ELDERY AND/OR DISABLED. While there are no income requirements, the program does take need into consideration when making the final selections. In particular, the program is designed to help individuals who have no means to make the needed repairs themselves.

Skilled and unskilled volunteers give six to eight hours of service to help with repairs. Christmas in April is a non-profit organization supported entirely by voluntary contributions of time and money. The program does have several limitations, however, CHRISTMAS IN APRIL CANNOT MAKE STRUCTURAL REPAIRS OR UNDERTAKE PROJECTS THAT CANNOT BE COMPLETED IN ONE DAY!

Repairs are limited to the last Saturday in April. Even with a team of 20 or more volunteers assigned to the home, we cannot guarantee that all work that needs to be done can be complete or that all requested work will be done.

Repairs differ in each home but they can include: interior and exterior painting, minor carpentry, plumbing and electrical work, replacing stoves, refrigerators and hot water heaters, if existing appliances are not working, clean-up and yard work may also be included.

The Christmas in April work will be done on Saturday, April 24, 2010. We anticipate accepting as many as 100 homes for repair in the 2010 program. If you know of someone who may be interested, please have them complete the attached application and return it to:

Christmas in April*Prince George’s County
7915 Malcolm Road
Clinton, MD 20735

Applications must be received in the Christmas In April office by November 1, 2009.

If you are applying on behalf of someone or making a referral, please discuss your referral with the homeowner prior to submitting the application and secure as much of the required information as possible. We also need your name, relationship to the homeowner and your phone numbers. The applicant will be notified in writing by January 2010 whether or not they have been selected for the 2010 program.

Additionally, the program requires a site visit by a Christmas in April volunteer to make sure the repairs are within the scope of the Christmas in April program. The homeowner will receive a call in mid-November to schedule this visit.

If you have any questions about the program, please do not hesitate to contact Mary Kucharski at 301-868-0937.

President Obama in College Park‏, MD

This Thursday, President Obama will be coming to speak in College Park, MD. Following his major address on health reform to Congress last week, we're at an important turning point in our push for real reform, and it's critical that we seize this moment.

So we're inviting folks like you to come and support him. Please join us -- here are the details:

  • What: Health Reform Rally with President Obama

Last fall, when Swiftboaters and special interests attacked President Obama, folks like you came to his defense. We knocked on doors, talked to neighbors, and made our voices heard.

Now, we need to do it again. This time, he's under attack by Washington insiders, insurance companies, and well-financed special interests who don't go a day without spreading lies and stirring up fear. We need to show that we're sick and tired of it, and that we're ready for real change, this year.

Join us on Thursday to stand up for President Obama and publicly show your support for the big changes that the President is fighting for and that this country needs.

Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis, so please arrive as early as possible.

Nails in the Fence

Make sure you read all the way down to the last sentence…….

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally, the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, 'You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. But it won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound will still be there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Remember that friends are very rare jewels, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed….They lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us.

Please forgive me if I have ever left a 'hole' in your fence!

Important Notice About Swine Flu:

A recent outbreak of the swine flu is receiving a lot of attention in the news across the nation. Below is some important information we should all be aware of and also websites where you can find more detailed information and the latest news regarding this flu outbreak.

What are the signs and symptoms of swine flu in people?
  • The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions. How long does it take to develop symptoms if I believe I have been exposed to someone with Swine Flu?
  • Infected people MAY be able to infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop and up to seven or more days after becoming sick. That means you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick.
  • Precautionary measures for both seasonal flu and swine flu include:
Washing your hands often with soap and warm water. Alcohol-based hand cleansers are also effective.
  • Avoiding people who are ill.
  • Staying home from work, or school and all social events if you are sick.
  • Using tissue when you cough, sneeze or spit, and dispose of the tissue in a covered trash bin.
  • Keeping hands away from your face. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Cleaning shared space more often such as phone receivers, keyboards, steering wheels and office equipment.
  • Refraining from sharing personal items such as forks, spoons, toothbrushes and towels.

For additional information:

If you believe you have Influenza type illness and are having medical difficulties, put a mask on (any type will do, a handkerchief) and contact your local emergency room.

FAA Job Opportunities‏

FAA Job Opportunities:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is taking applications for air traffic controller school. Candidates should be between the ages of 18-31 with a high school diploma. With some effort, selected candidates could reach a salary of over $100,000 with benefits in about 3 years. You need only a high school diploma to apply and credit is given for college on the exam.

Go to: http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ahr/jobs_careers/occupations/atc/ to find out how to apply.

To find out what this position entails, go to: http://www.faa.gov/jobs/job_opportunities/airtraffic_controllers

Interested candidates are strongly advised to apply as soon as possible, even if they aren't sure if they want to attend immediately. This is a federal position and the selection process may take months. The key is to apply NOW... Much of the workforce is at retirement age and the FAA will want to line up training to accommodate potential openings. It's my understanding that the FAA rarely has an open application such as this and that the jobs are coveted.

This is a great opportunity and it should be noted that choosing a site like Anchorage or Indianapolis to train is a likely acceptance into the training program - after which you can transfer anywhere in the country that has a tower.

Please see the links above for more information.

Location: Verizon Call Center

The Hanover location is Verizon Wireless' customer call center, and its regional headquarters is also in Howard County in Laurel. During the fourth quarter, Verizon Wireless reported a 10 percent jump in retail customers to 70 million.

Live On Purpose Today!

Live on purpose today, His purpose. If your day was anything like mine was this morning, with the rain, the commute and metropolitan traffic, you could arrive at your destinations ready for the day to be over. But take heart. Those feelings are indications that Jesus' purpose for your day is underway and the battle has begun to stop it, either by your will or principalities of the air. PRAY and know what God says about you and this day. Seek opportunities to redirect your focus from you and your feelings. Be ready to give an answer for the hope that is within you.
